Typhoid fever is caused by small bacterium called Salmonella Typhi. This bacterium thrives in dirty environments.
Typhoid can be spread through poo, contaminated food and drinks. House fly can spread this bacterium. Typhoid fever is common after a flood, due to the easy spread of the bacterium. About 3%-5% of people become carriers of the bacteria after the acute illness. Others suffer a very mild illness that goes unrecognized.
up to 1 in 25 people who survived typhoid fever without treatment will become carriers of the infection. When you take food or water that contain Salmonella typhi bacteria, the bacteria moves down into the digestive system, where they will quickly multiply.
This brings about constipation, stomach pain or diarrhoea. When there is no treatment, the bacteria gets into the bloodstream and spread to other areas of the body. This can also make the symptoms of the typhoid fever to get worse during the week after infection.
It is also possible for organs and tissue to get damaged as a result of the infection. And this can cause complications like internal bleeding or a section of the bowel splitting open.
